Objectives
Langara College’s Film Arts Program combines theoretical groundwork with a practical focus on:
- learning by “doing it” with a hands-on approach.
- producing festival quality videos.
- lighting the fire of creativity.
- encouraging independent film-making.
- writing, directing, and acting, and then doing it in reverse, then doing it again … and again …
Outcomes
All Film Arts students will learn how to:
- demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of the film-making process and the film industry.
- identify and clarify the chain of command of crew members on set and in the production office.
- prepare a career path with clear goals and an action plan to see it through.
Compare
We encourage students to do research and compare us with other film programs. In a nutshell, here's what we offer:
- Fully integrates writers, directors, and actors. Highly collaborative environment.
- Guaranteed to write, direct, or act (depending on stream) in a minimum of two festival quality films. Actors often cast in 5-8 films.
- 8-month advanced and intensive certificate program.
- Extremely low cost at $5,000 for the entire program, including cost of production.
- You own copyright & distribution rights in the films you produce.
- Strictly drama-based program.
- Focused on the business of film and career preparation. Program includes two professional certifications through BCIFP.
- Collaborate with professional Production Designers, build sets and shoot in a studio.
- Directors immersed in visualization techniques, cinematography, editing, sound design, script analysis, how to communicate effectively with actors.
- Writers write features, shorts, television scripts, develop series, write adaptations and learn story-editing skills. They’re hands on in production too.
- Actors hone on-camera and audition skills, practice scene study, script analysis, create material for acting and voice demo tapes.
- Active Advisory Committee with representatives from funding agencies, television stations, production companies, filmmakers’ cooperatives, artists’ agents and more.
- Hands-on training with passionate instructors and working professionals. Every day.
